Like Dogs and Cats

OKAY, A MAN’S BEST FRIEND IS HIS DOG. Very often. But then it might be his cat. Or her bird. His snake. Maybe even her ferret. We don’t have any ferrets in this month’s “Pampered Pets” issue of San Diego Magazine, but we have lots to say to pet owners, including the ferret aficionados out there.

In her cover story, Margie Farnsworth, our go-to player when it comes to the animal kingdom, lays out the latest in creature comforts—everything from a $5,475 doggy camper for rich bitches to an apartment-size, canyon-side aviary for Roscoe the University Heights macaw. There’s also a profile of San Diego’s first board-certified pet internist; the latest in retail for animals; and something for our real party animals. Would you believe a puppy shower, replete with ice-sculpture fire hydrant?

If a man’s (or woman’s) best friend is his (or her) dog, then a man’s (or woman’s) home is his (or her) castle, right? Well, in San Diego, it may carry a castle’s price tag, but the tag could be on a 700-square-foot cabin on leased land in Mount Laguna. You just have to know where to house-hunt. San Diego’s stratospheric home prices are well-documented, but in “The Real Estate Ride,” Thomas K. Arnold uncovers some neighborhoods where potential buyers can still find relative bargains.

Also in this issue: Business writer Rich Acello finds even more real estate bargains down Mexico way. In “The Search for an Airport II,” we take a look back 50 years and come up with another cliché: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
