BRIGHT KNIGHT:

The 78th annual Candlelight Ball benefiting Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, at the Del Mar Country Club, was chaired by Betty Knight Scripps and featured Oscar-winning actor Cliff Robertson as guest of honor. Major supporters and underwriters included Linda and Marc Edwards, the Harriet E. Pfleger Foundation, June and Neil Ash, Charlie Robins, and Betsy and Doug Manchester. The benefactor committee included Diane and Rod Dammeyer, the Walter Earley Jr. family, Mary and Jack Goodall, Bernice and Leonard Lavin, Debra and Warner Lusardi, Martha and Louis Mack, Harle Montgomery, and Tiki and Larry Spitcaufsky.

DIAMOND LIFE:

La Jolla Playhouse presented the “Diamonds Are Forever” gala at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center to celebrate its 60th anniversary and honor director emeritus Des McAnuff. The event was chaired by Debby Jacobs. The evening included dinner in the Sheila & Hughes Potiker Theatre, a special tribute to McAnuff and a performance by John Lloyd Young, who recently ended his Tony Award–winning run as Frankie Valli in the original Broadway cast of Jersey Boys.



FLOWER POWER:

The Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA and Paul Ecke Ranch hosted the 11th annual Paul Ecke Jr. Poinsettia Ball in Encinitas to support financial assistance programs benefiting local families and agencies. Lizbeth Ecke was committee chair; Richard Houk was master of ceremonies.



A STERLING SILVER:

St. Germaine Children’s Charity hosted its annual holiday Silver Tea at the La Jolla home of William Davidson and Dawn Kearney Davidson to raise funds for child abuse prevention programs. Sarah Burton was chair; Sally Irwin cochaired. Joining president Karen Miller on the Silver Tea committee were Maurine Beinbrink, Terry Cooper, Norma Hidalgo-Del Rio, Miriam Krippl, Gayle Martin, Suzanne Pope, Ruth Varonfakis and Marilee Warfield, among others.



OUT EAST:

The Friends of East County Arts presented its annual holiday tea at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to support the development of the fine arts in greater East San Diego County. 10News anchor Carol LeBeau was host; Cheryl Minshew was event chair. The all-volunteer organization has raised more than $450,000 for arts-based programs.



FASHION AVENUE MEETS FASHION VALLEY:

New York fashion design icon Carolina Herrera hosted a private cocktail party to celebrate the opening of her new CH Carolina Herrera boutique at Fashion Valley. The intimate reception was cohosted by Las Patronas, host of the annual Jewel Ball, San Diego’s most successful fund-raising tradition.



GRAND OL’ TIME:

Jeanne Jones and Cathryn Ramirez chaired the Burnham Institute for Medical Research’s annual gala, “A Toast to the Future,” at The Grand Del Mar, where 350 guests raised more than $1 million. South Dakota philanthropist T. Denny Sanford announced his $20 million donation to the institute to establish a program focusing on childhood diseases. Patrons included Peggy and Peter Preuss, Betsy and Doug Manchester, Roberta and Malin Burnham, Jeanne Jones and Don Breitenberg, Anne Evans, Kim and Marilyn Fletcher, Sid and Jenny Craig, Audrey Geisel, Erna and Andrew Viterbi and former California governor Pete Wilson and first lady Gayle Wilson.



GERBER’S BABIES:

Nightlife magnate Rande Gerber (a.k.a. Mr. Cindy Crawford) hosted a bash to celebrate the official opening of his Moonstone Lounge & Sweetwater Salon inside downtown’s new Hard Rock Hotel. The celebrity guest list included Ashlee Simpson and musician boyfriend Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boys), Brody Jenner, Cisco Adler, members of bands Gym Class Heroes, P.O.D. and Cypress Hill, Shwayze, actor John Corbett (Sex and the City) and Cindy Crawford.



KEEPING UP:

Kim Kardashian, December Playboy cover model and star of the hit reality-TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, hosted Stingaree’s second-anniversary party VIP reception. Other celeb attendees included cohost DJ Vice, Khloe Kardashian and apl.de.ap of The Black Eyed Peas.



TREAD GINGERLY:

Gingerbread City 2007 chair Sally B. Thornton and the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County honored vice chairman Charles “Beaver” Curo of the Barona Band of Mission Indians at the 14th annual gingerbread-design competition and holiday gala at the U.S. Grant Hotel. Veronica Centeno and Maria Gonzalez of San Ysidro Adult School won the themed competition (“America the Beautiful”) with their “Christmas at the Capitol” design. Melody Morse and son Chad took top honors in the traditional category. All proceeds benefited the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego.
