MUSIC
Steely Dan Returns
Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the suave but snarky duo known to most as Steely Dan, began their musical experiment at Bard College in New York more than 40 years ago. Over the past four decades, Becker and Fagen have escorted their sound in various directions, from brainy rock with guitarists du jour (Denny Dias, Elliot Randall and Jeff Skunk Baxter) to jazz-rock fusion. But they’ve always managed to skillfully wrap mordant, ambiguous lyrics, intricate time signatures and complex jazz chords around catchy rock and soul hooks. After a 19-year break, the Dan returned triumphantly in 2000 with Two Against Nature, which, against all odds, earned them the best-album Grammy. It isn’t the band’s best——Grammy voters in their infinite wisdom passed on Dan gems like Countdown to Ecstasy, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam and Aja——but it was still a welcome return of the wry, literate musical auteurs who named their group after a sex toy in William S. Burroughs’ novel Naked Lunch. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, Becker and Fagen are coasting a bit now, but they do that with more panache than most.
